Hire a Financial Advisor Right for You
For many, understanding all aspects of personal finance can be daunting. From investments to retirement to insurance to estate planning, the decisions can be overwhelming.
This is why many people decide to hire a financial advisor to help. A good financial advisor should assist you to better define your financial goals, create a roadmap to achieve them, and then provide strategies and advice to maintain the path.
Finding the Right Fit with Your Financial Advisor
If you think you may want to hire a financial advisor, we recommend you do a few things first:
Spend a few minutes reflecting on where you would like to be financially in 5, 10, or even 30 years. Do you have any dreams for your retirement? Expensive hobbies or activities you’d like to pursue? Or, more immediate goals, perhaps around family or education?
Consider how you best like to work with people. Are you put off by an aggressive, ego-driven approach? Do you want someone to execute financial decisions that you make on your own—or are you open to two-way engagement in forming your plans? How important to you is feeling comfortable with the person advising you?
Research the qualifications and experience of the advisors you are considering. Ask people you trust which financial advisors in your community they recommend.

What Does It Cost to Hire a Financial Advisor?
Financial advisor fees vary. Some advisors charge fees in the form of commissions; others apply an hourly rate or assess a percentage of your account value.
Here are the six most common ways financial advisors charge fees:
1. Percentage of assets that they manage on your behalf, typically anywhere from 1% – 2% per year. The more assets you have, the lower the fee.
2. Hourly rate.
3. Flat fee to complete a specified project.
4. Commissions paid to them from financial or insurance products you buy through them.
5. Combination of fees and commissions, sometimes called “fee-based.”
6. Quarterly or annual retainer fee.
When evaluating fees, always consider how much value you are getting for your money. This is sometimes called in business your benefit-cost ratio. At Connections Financial Advisors, we offer all the fee options listed above and we can work with you to recommend the most cost-effective structure for your situation at our complimentary initial meeting.
If you think you want to hire a financial advisor, it’s best not to procrastinate. Because of the time value of money—which essentially means that a dollar invested today is worth more than a dollar invested in the future—each day you wait can put you further behind your target. But, it’s never too late.
The sooner you start smart management of your personal finances and investments, the better.
